Celtics, Lakers, 76ers have plenty riding on the NBA lottery

Magic Johnson highlights the list of onstage team representatives at Tuesday night's National Basketball Association draft lottery.

The Celtics hold the Brooklyn Nets' 2017 first-round pick, meaning they have the best odds of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft when the lottery takes place on Tuesday night. So the Hornets have a 90.7 percent chance of picking No. 11 and a 6.3 percent chance of picking No. 12.

If you are unfamiliar with how the NBA's weighted lottery works, it involves 14 ping-pong balls numbered 1 through 14. They had about a 53 percent chance of falling out of the top three, which would have triggered a trade of the pick as remaining payment of their acquisition of Steve Nash in 2012. He's convinced the Suns will get an impact player with that fourth pick.

The Philadelphia 76ers round out the top three spots for the June 22 draft.

As we enter Tuesday night's lottery, Chicago still has a shot at the pick but the chances are less than 1 percent.

This will be just the second time since 2009 that the Knicks possess a lottery pick. That is how Philadelphia feels about the former general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers in Sam Hinkie.

Dallas has a 1.7% chance of getting the No. 1 pick, a 2.0% chance of getting the 2nd pick and 2.41% chance of getting the 3rd selection. If the Bulls or Pacers change their minds about the directions of their franchises, they could come calling for that No. 1 pick, plus a player or two as filler. "We've got to get better in close games".

The Nuggets don't have good odds, but sometimes the odds don't mean much as many teams with low percentages to win the lottery have overcome the odds to win.

The Los Angeles Lakers, fortunately, kept their first-round pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, even moving up one spot to pick second overall. "But it was time to start rebuilding four years ago, and now, we're starting to see some benefits". The Kings will select fifth and 10th. Both of those teams were to the worst team in the league at the end of the season.

Ball's father, LaVar, hopes the UCLA star stays in Los Angeles to play for the Lakers, who will be represented on stage by team president Magic Johnson. Unfortunately for them, they are considered the top prospects in this year's class. Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball are expected to be the top two picks in the draft.
